I recently discovered that Uber lost $95.74 while I was driving last week. Sounds alarming, or at least different than the narrative from other drivers online, doesn't it?
But before we get too worried, let's break down the situation and explore whether this poses a real threat to Uber's sustainability and our jobs.
In that particular week, I earned $857.59, which was 85% of the $1,006.18 paid by passengers. The rest went to taxes and insurance. My earnings were exceptional due to driving during peak hours and in a unique college town market. I even managed to earn $50 per hour online in just 17 hours! However, my average hourly rate for the past year has been closer to $35.
