Every job in life requires a unique set of human skills. Driving rideshare for Uber and Lyft is no different. To the point, these are life skills to help you in any role: gig work, full-time job, parent, friend, and neighbor.
Patience: The light will turn green. The passenger will come out. You will get a good ride. It's not easy calmly waiting, but the good things will come if you can. Stress, frustration, tickets, and even wrecks happen when you're not patient.
Kindness: Tips are where the money is at when driving an Uber. The kindest driver will always get more tips. And you need to go out of your way to be kind. Hustle! Open doors, load and unload groceries, and most importantly, listen to what the passenger is saying. More often than not, they just want someone to listen to them.
Consistency: Only one day will ever be your best day, and we should strive for today to be that day. However, getting out on the road on the same days and times will ensure you make the most money. Uber and Lyft are software with complex algorithms; the more data they have, the better your experience and pay.
These are the three human skills that have helped me earn thousands of dollars. Over the past year, I've averaged $29.74 an hour, with a 13.8% tip rate, all while maintaining a 5-star rating.
Having patience, being kind, and consistently being on the road will ensure you have the best overall rideshare experience as a driver. You're not going to become a billionaire driving an Uber, but you can have a rich and fulfilling life.
