Be a healthy Uber driver.

Why do some of us work so hard and make a lot of money yet not have the health to enjoy it? Driving and sitting in cars for long periods can be especially dangerous to our health. Being inactive, especially in a stressful situation like rideshare driving, is unhealthy. 

Here's what you can do for your health driving an Uber or Lyft for many consecutive hours and days.

Drive Safely: There's no reason to speed, weave through traffic, or not maintain your car. Passengers are counting on you to get them to their destination safely. And your car is your business.

Breaks: About once an hour, between passengers, you should pull over, get out, and move around. Touch your toes, do some jumping jacks, or stretch. Maybe you can walk around your car. Do anything to move your body for about 2 minutes.

Hydrate: Your body is primarily water, and for the most part, you can't drink enough. Drinking enough water will help with energy, brain functions, hunger, and a myriad of other aspects of your health. Staying hydrated will cause you to pee, which isn't bad because you need breaks.  

Driving Ergonomics: Take the time to set up your seat, steering wheel, and mirrors. Buy good seat cushions and lumbar support. And while you are driving, pay attention to your posture. Don't slouch. Your back and shoulders will thank you!

Walk: Go for a 30-minute walk every day. It doesn't matter if you do it before, during, or after driving. Walking will get your blood flowing and help your mind. Just get out and get moving. 

Stretch: When you get done driving take 5-10 minutes to stretch. Touch your toes, twist your back, reach for the sky, and all the other full-range movements. Yoga is another form of disciplined exercise to help release your tense driving muscles. 

Exercise: Take your walking and stretching to the next level will cardio exercises and weight lifting. Start with basic jumping jacks, squats, and other calisthenics. Over time you can advance to biking or running and weights. Building your muscles will help with overall health.

Sleep: Getting 6-8 hours of deep sleep will help you start your day refreshed and ready for driving. I recommend taking a full-day off too. 

Diet: It's easy to go through a fast-food drive-through. However, it's better to pack your meal, especially if you have some fruits and veggies. Eating well will help you stay on the road longer.
