Short Uber and Lyft Rideshare Trip Economics - Why I disagree with Sergio

The scenario was simple: Sergio had a few minutes to spare before picking up his daughter and a handful of short trips that didn't seem worth the hassle. He passed on these, but here's where our paths diverge. I looked at those same trips through a different lens, calculating not just the immediate payout but also the potential for tips and the strategic placement for the next ride.

For instance, a 6-minute trip paying $3.70 that Sergio skipped? I'd jump on it! Why? Those short jaunts can add up, especially when you factor in tips, which, on average, bring my per-trip earnings up by $1.45. It's all about the long game, maximizing revenue per mile and minute.

Driving in Los Angeles, or any big city for that matter presents its own set of challenges and opportunities. While Sergio sees palm trees and crap $2 trips, based on his data, I see a bustling marketplace ripe for the savvy driver. Driving through canyons or to iconic locations like Santa Monica Boulevard has its allure, too. Still, the numbers speak to me at the end of the day.

So, let's talk strategy. Those rejected trips would have been golden opportunities if I were in Sergio's shoes. Even without surges or quests, a series of short, efficient rides could easily outpace waiting idly for that "big fare." It's about keeping those wheels turning and making every mile count.
