The Top 5 Tips For Being a Safe and Attentive Uber Driver

Notice how she’s NOT wearing a seatbelt. I didn’t my job for safety on this ride.

There’s a lot of news when a rideshare driver assaults a passenger or thee numerous lawsuits against the companies. However little is said about the driver when it comes to safety.

As Uber drivers, our top priority should be the safety of our passengers. This means more than knowing how to get from Point A to Point B. It also means being aware of our surroundings and being able to anticipate the needs of our passengers. With that in mind, here are the top four tips for being a safe and attentive Uber driver.

1. Do a quick check of our vehicle before each ride.

I like to do a quick walk around. Ensure that all my lights are working correctly and that our tires have sufficient tread. We should also check our mirrors and adjust our seats so we're comfortable and have a clear road view.

2. Pay attention to our surroundings.

This means being aware of other vehicles on the road and keeping an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists. Always use caution when making turns or backing up, and be prepared to stop at a moment's notice. And while other drivers on the road are hazards, we should also pay attention to the neighborhoods and streets we drive. Uber drivers are prime targets for theft and violence.

3. Follow the rules of the road.

This one should go without saying, but it's worth repeating nonetheless. Obey all traffic laws, including speed limits, stop signs, and yield signs. This will seem counterproductive for Uber drivers, but we never use our cell phones while driving, even if it's hands-free. I text my passengers only when I'm parked.

4. Be prepared for emergencies.

Keep a first-aid kit in our car, a fire extinguisher, and a flashlight. If we ever find ourselves in an accident or stranded on the side of the road, these items could come in handy.

By following these tips, we can help ensure that every ride is safe and enjoyable for our passengers and us. Safety is always paramount - so pay attention, be cautious, and be prepared for anything!
