Uber CEO Admits to Wage Discrimination
A recent revelation from Uber's CEO has sparked discussions about how driver pay is influenced by behavioral patterns. This policy has long been denied by the company. This admission sheds light on a complex issue that straddles the line between performance incentivization and potential wage discrimination.
Wage discrimination in this context doesn't necessarily mean what you might think. Instead of focusing on traditional forms of discrimination (such as gender or race), Uber's algorithmic approach rewards drivers based on their behavior - like acceptance rates and customer ratings.
And I’ll be frank, I don’t know exactly what behaviors Uber’s algorithm rewards. I can only logically assume based on what they say they want.
For example, Uber says they want us to be Diamond EV drivers. So okay, maybe they’re paying Diamond EV drivers more. I know I just got a $2,000 bonus for buying a Tesla as a Dimond Driver.
My advice is to think about what riders and Uber want. Riders want affordable, reliable, safe, professional transportation. Uber probably wants that too. If you’re exceeding that level of service, you’re most likely going to max out your potential earnings with Uber.
