Is Uber stealing tips from drivers? - Daily Drive 42

Let's dive into a hot topic that's been buzzing around: is Uber stealing our tips?

Bill Ackman, the billionaire Twitter guy, sparked this discussion with a tweet about his recent Uber experience. He rode in a yellow Uber cab in New York City and chatted with the driver, who claimed he had never received tips added through the app. To test it, Ackman tipped $5 at the end of the ride, but the driver's screen showed no tip. Ackman was shocked and even texted Uber's CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, but got no response. He called for Uber to repay these supposedly stolen funds and correct their earnings.

This got me thinking and questioning—could Uber actually steal our tips? I've had experiences where I received the full tip immediately and others where I got nothing despite the passenger's promise to tip. So, what's going on here?

The Passenger's Perspective

From the passenger's side, the transaction differs from typical tipping situations. They order Uber, get in the car, get distracted by texting or talking, and then forget to tip once they leave. Unless they're prompted by the app later, they might only remember to tip the next time they use Uber or Uber Eats. This explains why tips sometimes appear days later. But could Uber be hiding some of these tips?

Uber's Track Record

It's believed that Uber might intentionally mess up the tipping process or through some system error. Uber has a history of settlements and issues with driver payments, so it's not entirely out of the question. But how would Uber decide which tips to steal and which to let through? It could be more apparent.

A Simple Fix

There's a straightforward solution here: immediate notification. If a passenger tips, the driver should immediately see it on their screen. This transparency would build trust between us and the passengers. Imagine a passenger promising a tip for a quick stop, and you see that tip immediately. No more doubts, no more distrust.

The Bigger Picture

Uber establishes an adversarial relationship between drivers, passengers, and themselves. This could be so much better with simple fixes that make life easier for drivers and build trust with passengers. Tipping is crucial for us. It's a small way passengers can show appreciation and differentiate between drivers who go the extra mile and those who don't.

My Take on Tipping

Tipping matters a lot to me. It's a way to recognize hard work and excellent service. As drivers, we strive to offer the best experience—clean cars, safe rides, and helping with bags. We deserve recognition for that. However, Uber's current system makes it hard to trust that we get what we earn.

So, what do you think? Do you believe Uber is stealing tips? If it's true, it's a massive betrayal of trust. Let's keep this conversation going and push for the transparency we deserve.
