Tipping Culture is out of Control
This is actually an ironic twist because, technically, tipping is still 100% within our control as consumers. But that's not really the point, is it? No, I feel that people are frustrated that it seems like every person is asking for a tip, and it's not clear who we should and shouldn't tip. Subsequently, some just stop tipping everyone; they take a stand!
Here's the most common scenario these tip protestors bring up: they pay $3 for a cup of coffee, and then the server turns the tablet around. You've seen it – 15%, 20%, 25%, and some people have said they ask for 100%. It's like all they did was pour a cup of coffee. Right!?
Worse, for some people like me, tipping can feel like we're being judged by the server and the other people in line. I don't want to be the jerk that doesn't tip.
Tipping servers is one thing, though. The real problem is that we see this at absurd places, like a gas station tipping prompt after you've done all the work pumping your gas. Or maybe even the gas station counter, where after buying a stick of gum, the clerk rotates that tablet your way, eyebrows raised. Are they seriously expecting a tip for handing over gum? Let's be honest; it's less of a tip and more like a societal pressure upsell.
Pre-tipping? You've just ordered pizza delivery, and they haven't even started making the food. And there it is – the tipping prompt. It's not a "thank you for your service" tip, but more like a bid to the delivery drivers: take my order first! It feels like a sneaky hidden cost game, doesn't it?
Many look overseas, saying, "Hey, Japan's doing just fine without tipping. And they've got stellar service!" Why can't America be like them? I hear you. It's confusing, sometimes maddening.
But before you write off tipping completely, hang tight. Over the next few weeks I'm diving deep. I'm with you on the frustrations, but let's also unravel the mysteries of tipping. Why it exists, its merits, and perhaps, it might not be the villain we sometimes paint it to be. Stick around, and let's ride this tipping journey together!
